Missouri Drivers Education Requirements

Missouri has in place a graduated licensing system that requires teens to meet and exceed certain expectations before they will be allowed to drive a car without restrictions. Before this system was put into place, it is estimated that nearly one in every three drivers between the ages of 16 and 21 had been involved in an accident. This program is hoping to reduce that number, and make the roads safer for drivers of all ages.

The state of Missouri requires that drivers be at least 15 years old before they begin driver’s education. Parents should be prepared to sign a statement that shows they understand and agree that their teenager is going to be operating a vehicle under their authority. Only a parent, stepparent, grandparent, or licensed driving instructor should accompany a driver under 16. Once you reach the age of 16, anyone over the age of 21 may ride in the front passenger seat, as long as that person is licensed, 21, and rides in the front.

Everyone who rides in the car with a driver under the age of 16 must wear a seat belt. While it is good and safe idea to wear a seat belt no matter who is driving, those who are young and unskilled are much more likely to experience sudden starts and stops, which can cause injuries, not to mention the chance that drivers lacking expertise are much more likely to have an accident of some kind.
