'Hello,

My family just moved to the State of Massachusetts and I am trying to help our daughter convert her Alabama drivers license to a Massachusetts driver's license! We have already been to the RVM in the State of Massachusetts and my daughter application to convert her license was denied; even though her driving record is good, we have proof of insurance and her drivers license in the State of Alabama is valid!

When I asked the RMV in Massachusetts why this was a problem they told me that we needed to convert our daughters out of state Drivers Education Certificate from the State of Alabama to a Massachusetts Driver's Education Certificate and I am totally confused on what they are asking me to provide for them?

My daughter is 17 years old and has been driving for 11/2 years in the State of Alabma! Our daughter has already taken and passed her drivers education course at her local high school in the State of Alabama and she met and passed all of the requirements in the State of Alabama to obtain her learners permit and her drivers license! Plus, again we have always had her car insured and have proof of this, so I am just perplexed on what to provide them with and where to obtain what they need! Therefore, I need your help! I am trying to figure out how to locate the enclosed documentation for the State of Massachusetts RMV so that our daughter, Martha E. Powell 9/10/91 can have her Alabama drivers license converted to a Massachusetts drivers license.

Enclosed below is an exact description of what I have to provide for the State of Massachusetts in order for our daughter to convert her drivers license from the State of Alabama to the State of Massachusetts! Again, I am not sure at all what they asking me to provide them with - as in just a copy of her high school transcript or something else! Please help me! We just moved here, my daughter is a Senior in High School and to get a parking permit at Dartmouth High School by 8/11/2009 she has to have a current Massachusetts drivers license asap!

Application to Convert OUt of State Drivers Education Certificate in the State of Massachusettss:

"If your out-of-state certificate was not issued by a State Agency, you must provide documentation on state letterhead from the appropriate agency indicating that the certificate was issued bya recognized dirvers education program and listing the minium requirements for successful completion of that program."

Can you please assist me and or direct me concerning exactly which document the RMV of the great State of Massachusetts is looking for so I can convert my daughter license?

Respectfully,
Gail G. Powell, Mother of Martha E. Powell

Hi,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Most states require that teenagers fulfill two requirements in order to get a driver's license: a classroom driver education program and behind-the-wheel driver training.

Thanks

I'm having an ongoing discussion with my 16-year-old about Indiana's requirement that teen drivers not be allowed to have other kids in the car with them for the first 90 days of their license. We are totally surrounded by other families that say that "no one enforces that" and that there really are no legal ramifications of ignoring the requirement. I happen to think it really is a good idea (for kids to only be allowed to drive alone for the first 90 days). But i would love to hear from anyone that can give additional supportive information as to what happens if, for instance, the 16-year-old gets a speeding ticket during that first 90 days and has another teen is in the car. I also want to know what the insurance ramifications are if, God forbid, that he would have an accident (during that first 90 days) and another teen was in the car with him. Anybody know anything on this??
