Colorado has published statistics showing why driver’s education is so important to teen drivers. 16-year old drivers have more accidents than any other age group, contributing to automobile accident being the foremost cause of death for young people. Much like the rest of the United States, alcohol leads to many of these accidents, and taking a Colorado state-approved driver’s education course can help young people understand the consequences of drinking and driving, driving under the influence of drugs, and/or making poor driving decisions in general.

Colorado requires driver’s education courses be completed prior to receiving a learner’s permit. Drivers in the state of Colorado should also expect to go through a series of graduated licensing steps. The state of Colorado is one of many who has adopted this graduated licensing system, which gradually reduces the amount of restrictions on a young person’s driving privileges. Until the driver turns 16, they may only drive with the person who signed for them to receive their learner’s permit or a licensed driving instructor. Additionally, a parent or guardian must help the teen log 50 hours of driving experience, with 10 hours coming at night.

There are three options in the state of Colorado for obtaining the necessary driver’s education. The first option is a combination of twenty hours of training from a permanent business and 30 hours of parent-supervised training. The second option consists of 50 hours of parent-supervised training. The final option to consider is 6 hours of training from a permanent business coupled with a minimum of 44 hours of parent-supervised driver’s training. Teens may begin practicing at age 14, but cannot receive their learner’s permit until age 15.
