Delaware Drivers Education Requirements

In the state of Delaware, there are many types of criteria that a teenager must meet or exceed in before they can hope to receive a learner’s permit or driver’s license. A state-approved driver’s education course is one of these many requirements, and many states have adopted similar licensing laws. While the state of Delaware is not as strict as some states, the state has recognized this need for training young people for the responsibilities that driving represents, and the consequences for bad decisions while driving, including drugs and alcohol.

You must be at least 15 years and 10 months old before you can receive your learner’s permit. This is slightly older than most states (averaging between 14 and 15 years of age), but younger than a few others (16 years even). Delaware is a participant in the graduated licensing program, so be prepared to have your driving privileges restricted for the first few years that you are driving. You must drive with a licensed adult driver at least 25 years old in the front passenger seat, and the backseat can only have as many passengers as can safely be belted in with a seatbelt.

Your parent or legal guardian must be prepared to sign an affidavit stating that you have driving experience. You must obtain at least 50 hours of behind-the-wheel experience, and at least 10 of these hours must be at night. Unless you are driving your immediate family, passengers during the first six months of driving are limited to one supervisor and one passenger in the backseat only. In addition, using a cell phone while driving is against the law in Delaware unless it is an emergency.
