District of Columbia Drivers Education Requirements

The District of Columbia has its own restrictions and guidelines governing the teen driver. While a formal driver’s education course is not required in order to get a learner’s permit, Washington DC does offer a program that is invaluable in teaching teens how to drive safely and responsibly. Washington DC is one of many states that have adopted a graduated licensing program, and driver’s education is a valuable asset to this program.

You must be at least 16 years old in order to receive a learner’s permit in the District of Columbia. Be prepared to bring a notarized letter from your parents stating that you have their permission to drive before applying for your learner’s permit. Your front seat passenger should always be a belted, licensed, 21 year old driver in order for you to be allowed to drive.

Like most states, there are provisions dictating driving at night for those under the age of 21. Nighttime is a dangerous time to drive, and teen drivers are encouraged to leave the night driving to those more experienced, though certainly not necessarily more responsible. Always be sure that the person teaching you how to drive understands the restrictions of the road and is prepared to teach them to you, as this could be the difference between life or death for both you and those you are driving.
