Idaho Drivers Education Requirements

Like many other states in the United States, the state of Idaho participates in the graduated licensing program. This ensures, or at least hopes to ensure, that teens will be appraised of the situations that they can and often will be faced with while driving. Peer pressure, road conditions, and weather can all contribute to automobile accidents, and teens are killed all too often because of making poor decisions in these areas. Driver’s education can help decrease the number of teens injured or killed due to driving accidents, and hopefully this statistic will become outdated soon.

The state of Idaho requires that teens be at least 14 ½ years old before they can obtain a driving instruction permit. They must also pass a driver’s education program approved by the state of Idaho. Four months of incident-free driving is required to pass this first step of driving experience. During this time, only a licensed driver age 21 or older can ride in the front passenger seat, and all backseat passengers must wear a seatbelt at all times. This includes both family members and children as passengers.

During this first period of graduated licensing, teens will gain experience. To graduate to the next level of driving privileges, teens will need to achieve a minimum of at least 50 hours of driving practice, 10 of which must take place after dark. They will also need to complete and pass 30 hours of classroom training, and spend 6 hours behind the wheel with an instructor seated next to them. An additional 6 hours will be spent observing someone else drive (with a licensed instructor seated in the passenger seat).
