Indiana Drivers Education Requirements

The state of Indiana is well aware of the daunting statistics facing teenage drivers. Nearly three times as many 16-year olds die in car accidents than any other age group, and this same age group is responsible for many of the automobile accidents that happen every day. If drugs and/or alcohol are involved, this number is even higher, accounting for an even greater number of deaths and injuries to all age groups each year.

Indiana requires that all student drivers complete a state-approved driver’s education course before they get their driver’s license. This includes a minimum of at least 30 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, and 6 hours of driving observation. The state has added the bonus that a “B” achieved on the course (both classroom and road segments) will earn the driver the right to forego the driving exam and only the written test will be required.

To obtain their learner’s permit, drivers in the state of Indiana should be at least 15 years old. These teen drivers will need to show proof that they are enrolled in the approved driver’s education program, and the course should begin within three weeks of the date they receive their learner’s permit. While you are attending driver’s education, only an instructor or parent (legal guardian) can ride in the car with you. After you have completed driver’s education, licensed relatives or stepparents may also ride in the car with you.
