Louisiana has joined the ranks of states that have a graduated licensing system in place in order to ensure public safety. Teens account for many driving accidents every year, and this system of gradually increasing the privileges and decreasing the guidelines is working to avoid the number of injuries, damages, and fatalities that come with these accidents. While not all states are requiring driver’s education, the state of Louisiana is among the number of states that see things a little differently. You must be at least 15 years old in order to begin your driving instructions in Louisiana. You must complete a minimum of 30 hours of classroom training and 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction before you can apply for your learner’s permit. In addition, you can only drive with a parent or legal guardian who is at least 21 years old and has a valid driver’s license, or a licensed sibling who is at least 18 years old.

The state of Louisiana requires that at least a 6-hour driver’s education course must be taken prior to getting a learner’s permit. There are 36-hour driver’s education courses also on-hand to learn advanced driving techniques and get more valuable time learning in the classroom, but the advanced class is not mandatory and not required by law in order to get a learner’s permit. However, it is required to be taken and passed before a teen driver can be eligible to receive a full driver’s license.
