More about South Dakota and Teen Drivers
This is important to all teen drivers!!
While you are driving with a learner’s permit, you must have an adult in the front passenger seat who is at least 18 years old and has a minimum of one year of driving experience. From 10 at night until six in the morning, only your parent, stepparent, or a legal guardian can accompany you (and they must be in the front passenger seat) unless it is a true emergency.
South Dakota Drivers Education Requirements
Like most states in America, first time drivers in South Dakota should be prepared to face the graduated licensing program and all of its restrictions and regulations. This series of gradually lifting the restrictions off a novice’s driver’s license helps to prepare teen drivers for the responsibilities accompanied with driving. It educates them in the causes and consequences of poor decision making while driving, and can help decrease the risk of drinking and driving or driving while under the influence of drugs if teens pay careful attention.
You must be at least a minimum of 14 years old in order to get your learner’s permit in South Dakota. You must have this permit for 180 days before you can get your driver’s license. On the other hand, if you take and pass a state-approved driver’s education course, you only have to carry your learner’s permit for an infraction-free 3 months before you can try to get your driver’s license, so driver’s education may be a great idea, especially if you are in a hurry.
